Sunday Bill picked up more brass brads and coupler mounting bolts and lock nuts. Back at the AVR Vic worked on details and half round. Phil S. and Bob H. worked on 6612's timing problems but were not able to solve the reverse problems. Bill cast more windows and parts for the stock cars and caboose project. He also installed couplers on car 444 and 434. Monday Barry started to look at the timing positions for locomotive 6612 to try and understand what had been done to the systems. Bill used up the last of the casting material. Tuesday Vic continued with 5427. Bill got more plastic and used it up on the balance of windows and roof walk supports. The RTV mould for roof walk supports broke so a new box was made and another mould made. Wednesday Vic worked on 5427's tender concentrating on details and repairing water leaks on the small front water cells. Bill bent ten of the four corner lower foot rungs for the box cars. Bob made up another twelve making enough for next year's stock car building. Bill made up another 10 grab irons. Rob drilled out mounting holes on the lower foot rungs. Bill mounted four on car 444. Phil M. spent some time on the electronic bell for 5427. Thursday Vic continued with cleanup on the tender and was joined by Ralph who started making some detail parts. Bill mounted all the grab irons on car 444 and then glued on all the grab iron nut and bolt details. Friday Bill investigated how Peter had built the ladders for his box car. The template we had was not the correct one so a new rung arrangement was made and the first ladder was fabricated and installed on car 444. Rob, Bill and Joseph loaded the unfinished car and the steel box car to be taken to the railroad museum for this weekend's train show at the Via Depot. The display was set up. Dwight supplied a signal, some signs and flags, and a switch stand. Vic started re-assembling the tender after its water test. Saturday April 25th, Bill Updated the web site. Richard cleaned up garbage and spent the afternoon bringing in Christmas displays. He was joined by Phil M. and Frank with the train to transport collected lights. Vic and Frank brought the new trailer to the steaming bay area and were joined by Richard, Bill, Phil and Ralph to move the steel for locomotive storage. Dwight worked on switch circuit controller parts. Vic and Ralph worked on tender parts for 5427. Barry and Phil S. continued with adjustments to the timing on 6612 and had the locomotive running on air. Reverse seemed less binding. Next test on steam. Bill modified and enhanced the ladder building template. Frank cut and bent about 16 grab irons for the box cars. Bill made up four box car ladders. Down at the museum Rob, Fred and Phil M. looked after the display. Sunday Bill updated the web, took some lights down and started on the sixth side ladder. Vic and Ralph continued work on 5427 completing the brackets and supports for the middle section of the tender and seat area. Vic welded the seat bracket in place. Barry and Phil made more adjustments to 6612 and Bill completed ladder #6 and #7. Rob, Bill, Phil and Dwight took down the display at the depot. Barry, Rob and Bill unloaded it at the AVR. Monday Vic and Ralph fabricated and mounted the back markers on 5427's tender. Phil S. and Stephen re-assembled 6612 to be ready for a steam test on the weekend. Bill completed the last of the side box car ladders and made up a new template for the end ladders and built the first two. Six to go. Gil checked water on the west side. Tuesday Bill updated the web. Vic continued with 5427, changing the angle of a side blow down and re-mounting the components in the tender Bill built two more end ladders for car 434. Wednesday Vic continued to work on the tender and other loco details. A group of us planned the needs of the new trailer and plywood was secured and delivered. Bill made up an end ladder. Gil cut up the wood for the tender seat. Thursday Vic continued with 5427, Gil checked pumps, Bill made up another ladder and prepared steel for the last two. Friday Vic, Gil, Rob and Bill played musical locos in the engine house, first taking 5427 with tender outside where Rob took pictures but not before weighing the locomotive. Next 6612 was transferred to the lift and put on the south dolly where she will await her tender. while on the lift she was weighed. Next 2365 was transferred from north dolly to lift where she was weighed and placed on the movable loco stand for maintenance work. 2365's tender was taken from the car barn, weighed and placed on the north dolly. Bill completed the last two end ladders. Later in the day Vic and Barry mounted the water filters for pump and injector pickup for 5427 and Vic connected some hoses. Bill bent the supports and added the lower "U" rung to the first side ladder. The side running board hand rungs were put back on 2365. Saturday May 2nd Bill cut and bent seven lower ladder "U" style rungs and mounted the first complete side ladder on car 454 and a pair of couplers. He mounted the lower stirrups on car 454 and drilled and fastened all lower "U" rungs on side ladders and then bent and fashioned the lower brackets on 14 ladders. Next was to paint eight end ladders on the back side and six side ladders. Richard cleaned up garbage and continued to take down lights completing all but station and house. Phil M. worked on the bell sound unit for 5427. Frank cut up material and with assistance from Vic and others put upholstery on the seat for 5427's tender. Dwight made top covers for switch circuit controllers and planned wiring for 5427. Vic put all the accessories back into 5427's tender and prepared the locomotive for testing. Rob and Joseph got equipment out to do height measurements for a number of our cars to get proper spacing requirements on the racking for the new trailer. Bill and Phil M. measured locomotive heights. Sunday Bill mounted four lower stirrups on car 434. Updated the web page. Side brads were installed on one side of 454 and 434. In the afternoon all remaining ladders, stirrups and upper grabs were installed on the two cars. Vic, Barry and Gil steamed up 5427 for the first time and took her out on the line. She steamed well and all features worked but still some problems with the front truck and a number of fitting needed tightening. In the afternoon she was again steamed and no leaks were detected. Phil S, Phil M., and Bill went along for the ride. Monday Bill installed the last eight lower grab irons on the end of the two cars and Gil assisted in putting the cars in the car barn and putting two more cars in the station for ladder and stirrup work. Barry studied 5427 plans to see what modifications can be done to the front truck. Bill took off the crosshead guides of 2365 on both sides. Removed the front cylinder covers and valve covers and ensured the cap screws were tight. The left rear cylinder plate was removed and the rear gasket as suspected had failed. Bill made two new gaskets and replaced the left gasket and re-assembled the back plates and crosshead guides. All nickel-silver covers were cleaned and polished. Len returned the seat for 2365 which he had rebuilt at home due to water rotting the backing board. Tuesday Vic removed all internal equipment from the tender and with help from Gil moved it to his truck. He will polish it up and get it ready for pre-paint treatment. Bill put couplers on car 464 and stirrups along with four grab irons and 6 more ladders. Wednesday Gil cut up plywood and started fastening the base down in the new trailer. Bill installed the new gasket on the left side of 2365, polished the nickel-silver parts and replaced the running boards on the right side and cleaned up all the wheels and rods on that side. E-bay was closed and opened for the week. Box cars were worked on, filling holes, adding grabs, putting in brass brads. Thursday Rob and Vic removed the pilot and front truck of 5427 for modification. Bill cleaned the left side of 2365 and replaced the running boards. Ten additional grab irons were fabricated. Friday Vic marked and started to drill holes in the front frame where material needs to be removed on 5427. Rob rebuilt the brake system on a pair of trucks and drove in some brads on a box car. Bill installed the last ladder on box car 464 and placed the lower "U" bracket on the first ladder. Two end "Z" braces were removed and replaced as the spacing was not correct. Bill filled holes with plastic wood and put in four grab irons. Barry checked on 5427 progress. Saturday Bill updated the web, set the August meet times and did E-bay paperwork. Rob took the box cab out with our four gondolas with brakes and serviced and tested the cars. He then took a load of wire deer and artificial trees to Paterson. Bill put them away in the shed. Joseph and August busied themselves removing moss in front of the car barn. Phil M. worked on the bell sound system for 5427. Vic fabricated a back tender ladder. Barry checked out the binding front truck of 5427 and took it home for modification. Dwight worked on his switch circuit controllers. Fred made up six brake wheel standing platforms for 4 box cars and two future stock cars. Frank made up nine brake wheel gear box housing brackets, Bill made up three. Bill fabricated eight steel brackets for holding up the brake wheel standing platform and installed one on car 464 along with the upper housing. Bill de-flashed and set in place all cast bolt details for the grab irons on two cars and mounted the lower four grabs on car 464. Sunday, Mother's Day Bill installed the brake housing and lower platform on car 454 and machined all brackets. 2365 was taken out, steamed up and tested after the new gaskets. She was run for 2.25 hours and blown down, drained and put away. The test was successful. Monday Gil cut up the remaining wood for the trailer. Vic did more work on the tender ladder and preparation of the tender for sand blasting. Bill assembled one brake platform with brackets. Rob and Gil exchanged the box cars in the station for work to continue. Barry rebuilt 5427's front truck with attention to all parts that were binding and hitting when negotiating curves. Tuesday Vic took the tender for sand blasting and returned it to the engine house where Gil, Rob and Bill helped move it inside. Bill installed brackets, brake wheel and platform to car 434 and mounted 16 castings and moved one end "Z". Vic, Barry and Bill took 5427 out and used a diesel to push the locomotive around the entire railway including the west leg of the Wye that is 35 foot radius. The locomotive did not derail so next test will be under steam. Wednesday Vic worked on 5427 and Bill made up a detailed plan of the steel racking for the trailer. Bill opened and closed E-bay. Thursday Vic filled some drill holes in the locomotive frame and made some modifications to the tender and ordered the steel. Bill put in the last grab iron and mounted all the needed bolt details on the box car. Friday Vic replaced the pilot truck and replaced the pilot and items at the front end of 5427. Barry adjusted and checked various locomotive parts. Bill fabricated four retainer brackets and machined three brass retainer valves and riveted them to the brackets. Vic unloaded the steel. Saturday Bill updated the web and installed two retainer valves for the brake system of two box cars and cut and bent 1/8 steel rod to represent the piping. Gil set up his router in the trailer and cut six groves in the floor of the trailer to take the flanges of three locomotives. Barry had detected that the glass in 5427 was under some stress so he removed the fittings and after some machining to correct the alignment problem re-installed the glass. Vic continued the job of repositioning all the equipment in the tender of 5427. He attempted to put a first coat of paint on the tender but after doing each end the paint gun malfunctioned. Frank made some modifications to the padded seat. Fred carried steel for Bill, helped with measurements and took down the lights on the car barn and dog house. Dwight did some switch repair and track maintenance. Ed painted the trim on the car storage at Duck Lake. Brian came with new car sheets for the new box cars. Bill cut up all the steel for the trailer according to the plan. Later Bill designed the cam for the box car brake system and cut up blank pieces along with 20 flange plates for the trailer uprights. Sunday Vic made a last few modifications to the tender and blew a first coat of Pennsy Green on it. He also touched up some piping on the locomotive. Bill marked holes in the 10 steel channels for the walls for the trailers, cleaned up flash, drilled all holes and built a template for welding uprights and set up the first one. Vic welded it. Bill continued on preparing the steel for the evening. Barry and Vic discussed secondary air on 5427. Bill took care of some lights and loaded the first wheelbarrow of leaves in front of the station. Monday Victoria Day, Bill went to work on leaves in front of the station and moved 20 wheelbarrows to the west tunnel where the leaves will be mixed with soil. Vic and Bill worked on assembling the nine upright stands for the trailer. Vic welded while Bill lined up the steel in the template. Frank drilled holes in the 20 flange plates. Frank then cut out the box car brake cams and assisted Bill as he mounted the ten uprights in the trailer. Vic painted piping and other parts on 5427. Phil M. worked on the bell sound system for 5427. Bill updated the web and fixed the lap top so Front Page would again work on it. Tuesday Vic made up the couple of un-hook handles for the back of the tender and touched up paint. Bill machined one brake cam for car 434. E-bay was opened and three loads of leaves were moved. Bill gave the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the 82nd group a train ride using 6109. Wednesday Vic worked on the cab hand grabs for 5427. Bill made hanger brackets to hold the brake cam and connected the main rod via chain to the brake wheel housing completing that detail on car 434 and 454. Bill picked up 120 feet of unistrut for the trailer and positioned some for welding and designed a hinge system. Thursday Vic completed the forming of the cab railings and installed them on 5427. Bill lined up and clamped trailer tracks while Vic welded them in place. Bill cut and Drilled crossties while Vic welded them in place. Friday Vic took the tender out for a second coat of paint. Bill cut up more steel, positioned hinges, and set up tracks for Vic to weld in the trailer. Saturday May 23, Bill measured the old trailer body for a foundation size and marked the trees that need to be removed where the future eight-car storage will go. Bill moved 14 wheelbarrows of leaves and took down the lights on the upper station. Gil used his chain saw on the trees by the steaming bays were the old trailer body is to go. Bill and Gil cut up 2 x 6's for the base frame and cut risers and planted two large ties to create a foundation and nailed the whole structure together. Frank and Ian used 3001 to haul junk to the west tunnel for burying, brought eight buckets of rock to the bay area for levelling ties, took a load of logs and brush to the upper Cub camp fire pit area, brought lumber to the work site and took a load of Christmas lights to upper storage. Phil M. worked on the bell sound system of 5427 and got it working. Dwight made repairs to track alignment problems. Ed drew up a list of rolling stock so new cards can be created. Vic welded all the remaining track pieces that Bill had clamped in place in the new trailer and re-connected 5427 with its tender and took it out to test the rear truck. 6109 was put on the small rack so its brakes can be repaired and other service to be carried out prior to Train Mountain. Sunday May 24th. Bill took out 3001 and a train and greased all the rails, having had non since Christmas. All main line sidings were set for right hand running except Old Fort and Ash Grove that are set for left in preparation for the Fun Run Day on Sunday May 31st. Operation was flawless. Later in the day a group 12 family were given numerous rides without incident but due to frost still coming out speed should be slow this weekend. 3001 only has one operational charger. Bill typeset information for new card for the dispatch system. Monday Bill printed out a number of different lettering strips for 5427 in different fonts and letter sizes. Tuesday Vic worked on small details on 5427. Bill repaired the air leak on the rear left piston of 6109. A leak was found on the splitter but the truck will need to be dropped. Vic and Barry explored the flexibility in the rear truck. Bill closed e-bay. Wednesday Vic replaced items in the tender and mounted the builders plate on 5427. Bill started a new E-bay, worked on admin and did more yard work. Gil nailed down the main plywood on the foundation for the old trailer body. Bill and Gil chased two deer out of the fenced area and later Bill spent an hour evicting a third deer. Dwight spent the evening completing the control box for wiring on 5427 and fabricated the plug holding bracket. Thursday Vic mounted the plug bracket on 5427 and worked on air brake piping. Bill packed and mailed parcels and brought the old trailer to the steaming bay. He dismantled the front storage box and removed all tie down bolts that one person could handle and removed all materials. Bill spent an hour evicting the same doe. Friday Vic tested the air system and detected a leak in the new valve. He also serviced the air compressor. Gil cut and nailed the last piece of plywood on the storage deck and assisted Bill to remove the remaining tie down bolts. Bill evicted the same deer again and found out why she continues to return. Two tiny fawns were found. Saturday May 30th, Bill updated the web and set his attention on 6109 by dropping the front truck and repairing the air brake line to the truck. While up a chain link was repaired and a hanger bolt was missing and replaced. One brake shoe was replaced on the rear left side. The loco was lowered back on its truck and Rob replaced the washer and pin. Vic tested out the spare air compressor for 5427 and prepared more equipment for possible steaming on Sunday. Richard got 3001 out with a train and prepared for a birthday party. He was the engineer for a couple of double rides and along with Bill gave them a tour of our facility and show cars. Richard cleaned up and took down some missed Christmas items and Ashdown tables. Bill assisted in moving them. Dwight installed the first AVR computerized light control system for headlights and running lights in 5427. Phil M. continued on the bell sound generator for the K4. He also completed the spare control box for our diesels. Dwight did some re-wiring on Box Cab 25 and repaired some electrical to signals. Gil supervised and was assisted by, Vic, Bill, Rob, Richard, Dwight, Phil M and Ed in moving the old trailer body to the new platform by the steaming bay to become an instant car storage building. Vic cut steel and welded guides onto the new transition plate between trailer and visiting track unloading systems. Gil and Bill investigated the door problem on the maintenance building and determined the northwest corner of the building has moved and will need to be re-pinned. Rob checked and adjusted the brakes on car 220. Phil and Rob got all 4 new outside braced box cars out and Bill spray painted the back side of all the bracing and then swept out the station. Locomotives were put on charge. Cars were put away. Bill printed two car cards and Ed sorted them for dispatch on Sunday. Bill put eight radios on charge and went out for food supplies for Sunday. Last task was to cut up a vegetable plate and put all food away. Sunday May 31st, Fun Run Sunday. The first Fun Run Sunday was held today with a good group of AVR members present. The activity started in the morning with Barry our steam safety officer and assisted by Vic doing a boiler inspection on 5427 and 2365. Some small leaks were repaired on external piping and both boilers were deemed to be safe with a hydro test of 50% over operating pressure. Both 2365 and 5427 were steamed up with 2365 taking part in the switching program and 5427 doing shake down runs. 6612 was re-united with her tender and steamed up and did runs before being blown down. Diesels 3001, 6109 and 202, along with box cab 25 were available for switching duties. All operations were successful and all equipment ran well including the four new outside braced box cars that ran unfinished without their roofs. During the afternoon Len changed four of our older boat seats on operator cars with new seats for Train Mountain. Our older seats are being mounted on boxes to make more comfortable seating for long runs. Ed acted as dispatcher for the switching operation. At 5:30 the group sat down to a BBQ of cheese burgers, chicken fingers, fried potatoes, wieners and beans and finger food along with a Gold in honour of Peter supplied by Lynn. Steamers all developed some injector related problem around stuck check valves. Probably scale from the winter and the boiler tests. Some late evening runs occurred after supper and all equipment was put away. Dwight installed a cab light in 5427. Members participating in the run were, Bill, Mary-Lou, Len, Helen, Ed, Dwight, Barry, Jim, Rob, Shirley, Joseph, Leeann, Vic, Becky, Phil M., August, Emily, Phil S., Pat, Stephen, Frank, Arnold, Diana, Eric, Andrea and their three kids. All our steam locomotives require multiple means of getting water into the boiler so if one system causes a problem their is always a backup for safety reasons. In the case of 2365 it has two steam injectors, an axle pump and a tender hand pump, a total of four. Monday June 1st, Vic welded the latches on the upper tracks on the trailer racking, worked on the loading plate and supports and discussed with Bill some of the tie downs that still need installing. Bill took the left front check valve apart on 2365 and removed some scale. It will be steamed and tested. Vic made some repairs to 5427. Tuesday Vic made final adjustments to 5427 after Sunday's run. Bill drilled 12 holes in the trailer racking on the tilt section at the back to allow the ramped section to have multiple angles. Phil S. and Stephen cleaned injectors and checks on 6612 and steamed up but the right side injector will not lift. Bill picked up two additional sections of unistrut for tie downs. Wednesday Vic cut and welded three brackets to go under the trailer to hold positive stops for the locomotives. He started drilling and mounting them. Bill steamed up 2365 to test the repairs done to the left front check valve and was able to operate the left injector. On inspection there is a leak on the line to the left cock valve. Bill touched up chipped black paint on 2365. Dwight picked up steel for heavier re-rail plates and worked on switch circuit controllers. Phil M. is working at home on the bell for 5427 and Len is working at home on car tie downs and boat seat boxes. Thursday Vic continued mounting the brackets in the trailer and drilling holes into the trailer frame. Bill picked up material and touched up grey paint on the boiler jacket and re-painted the cylinder covers. Phil and Stephen picked up the trailer to clean junk out of the bottom. Bill repaired the steam leak on the cylinder cock supply line and changed the teflon seats. Friday Vic worked on 5427, setting up the tender and designing the hold down brackets. Bill ordered the lettering for 5427 and designed some trailer signs. Saturday Bill updated the web, wrote cheques and did admin then planted pots by the station. Vic cleaned any junk out of the boiler of 5427, repaired a steam leak on the cylinder cock line, cleaned out the check valves and worked on hold down brackets. Gil hauled rock for around the storage building. Bill, Rob and Joseph stacked the four log cars and four gondolas and with help from Gil loaded the first 10 cars in the trailer. Bill devised how the hold downs will work. Rob but the short operator car on 6109. Bill planted more plants. Gil and Linda spent part of the evening escorting a fawn and doe out of the fenced area. Len brought 10 new tie down bases and painted three seat boxes. Sunday Bill dug gardens and planted flowers. Vic continued to work on the trailer loco front tie down. He also did some loco details. Phil along with August worked on the speakers for 5427's tender for the bell. Bill built the extension piece so two show cars can be set on the second right track. He also cut stop blocks for cars and made up the hold down units and strapped and pulled down the 10 cars already in the trailer. Rob took pictures of progress and cleaned up 6109 ready for touch up paint and re-fastened the right side window. Gil, Linda and a young relative came to do another sweep of the fenced area looking for the elusive second fawn and its mother. The two were safely shown the door. Monday Bill ordered the trailer signs. Vic worked on hold down parts for 5427. Bill did black touch-up painting on 6109 on the roof and right side. Len made up spacers to go between the log cars. Tuesday Vic completed some tie downs for 5427 for the trailer. Bill and Rob loaded and tied down an operator car and a box car in the trailer. Rob turned 6109 180 degrees and Bill completed the touch up painting on the left side and the front. Dwight installed the lower front markers on 5427 and the tender markers. Bill showed two fawns the door from the forest and used the weed eater on tall grass around the station. During the morning a doe, fawn and red fox got into the inner yard and there was quite a commotion with Mary-Lou trying to get the deer out and keep the fox away from the fawn. In the battle three sections of fence were damaged. Bill later repaired those and four other places were deer had tried to get in.

THE AVR is a non profit club and we welcome new members who have an interest in small railroading. NEXT WORK SESSIONS WILL BE Wednesday & Saturday afternoons. Replace chargers in 202. Test equipment for ramble. Construction of four new outside braced box cars. Roofs and doors. Patch plaster in station. Change gear motor and chain sprockets on steaming bay lift. Cut up steel for additional locomotive storage. Assemble steel for locomotive storage. Make new deer gates. Tie in fencing to new storage building. Remove moss from Winch and behind station. Re-ballast spurs and areas were moss was removed. Re-build some Ashdown buildings. Check and repair track for dips and cross elevation problems. Fill road pot holes.
